Chaos is all the things we can't control. There are lots of things we CAN control, but there are some things we can't control. For example, we can't control if there is a pandemic across the world! And we can't control things like natural disasters.
That can be frustrating, or even scary. It feels comforting to control things. Here are some tips to help you feel better about Chaos.
To help us understand Chaos, make a chart with Zany Brainy on one side, and Chaos on the other side in your SEL journal. Try to think of the things you can control, and write them under the Zany Brainy side. For example, my Zany Brainy can conrol going to bed on time to get enough sleep, which helps me feel better the next day.
On the other side, under Chaos, write down the things you can't control. For example, I can't control if someone says something mean to me during the day.
It is important to understand what we can change, or control, and what we can NOT change or control. If Zany Brainy tries to control something that it can't, we are left feeling frustrated, angry, sad, confused, or anxious.
If my friend had this problem, what would I tell them to do?
It is good to accept the things we really can't control, and to focus on the things we CAN control or change. But sometimes it is hard to know what to do next.
In your SEL Journal, write down a problem you are having. Make a Zany Brainy vs. Chaos chart like you made above, but about your specific problem. Here is an example. Write down what you can control or change, and what you cannot.
Next, write down the advice you would give to a friend if they had the same problem. Is that good advice for you, too? Why or why not?
