1. Breathing is one of the best ways to help you calm down and relax. Sometimes it helps to know what is happening in our body. This is what happens in your body when you breathe.
When we are relaxed, we breathe more deeply. When we are upset, anxious, worried, mad, or any other emotion in the yellow and red zones, we don't breathe as deeply. When you make your body take deep breaths, that tells your brain you are more relaxed, which actually makes you more calm!
2. Deep breathing is a very natural way to breathe. But lots of times, we try to hold in our emotions. When you try not to cry, for example, what happens? You hold your breath! Trying to hold back our emotions has actually taught us to breathe less deeply. That is why it is important to re-teach our body to take deep breaths.
3. When we don't breathe deeply, our lungs don't get as much oxygen. That can make us feel anxious.
When we breathe deeply, our heart slows down (which is good), and our brain gets more oxygen which makes it work better!
